How it keeps time
- Length: 10 minutes = 600 seconds.
- On Start: end time = the moment you start + 600 s, read from your device’s clock.
- Every update: time left = end time − now, rounded up to the whole second — so it never drifts, even in a background tab.
Ten minutes of activity counts
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week, such as brisk walking. The first edition (2008) counted only activity done in bouts of at least 10 minutes; the second edition (2018) dropped that requirement, so any amount of movement counts toward the total. Ten minutes is still a convenient unit, though: three 10-minute walks a day on five days make exactly 3 × 10 × 5 = 150 minutes.
If you use this timer on a walk, keep the screen on. While it runs, the page asks your phone not to dim or lock the screen (where the browser supports it). If the phone locks anyway, the browser may pause the page — but because the timer works from its end time, the display is right again the moment you unlock.
More 10-minute uses
- Timed quizzes and practice tests in class, with the timer on the projector in full screen.
- A ten-minute tidy-up — at home or at the end of a lesson — where everyone stops when the alarm sounds.
- Focus sprints when a full 25-minute Pomodoro feels too long to start with.

How this timer works
Press Start, tap the digits or press Space. The timer saves the end time on your device’s clock and shows end time − now, rounded up to the second, so it stays exact even when your browser slows down background tabs; the remaining time also shows in the tab’s title. The alarm is scheduled on the Web Audio clock for the end time and beeps for up to a minute (phones that support it also vibrate). While the timer runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on. Nothing is sent anywhere: the timer runs entirely in your browser.

Shorter: 5 Minute Timer. Longer: 15 Minute Timer. For any other length, use the countdown timer; to time how long something takes, use the stopwatch. Counting down to a date instead? See the holiday countdowns.
Frequently asked questions
Do 10-minute walks count as exercise?
Yes. Since the second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (2018), activity of any length counts toward the 150 minutes a week recommended for adults; the earlier 10-minute minimum was removed.
How many 10-minute sessions make 150 minutes?
Fifteen: 150 ÷ 10 = 15, for example three a day on five days of the week.
Will the timer keep going if I switch apps?
The countdown itself never loses time, because it is based on the end time. Whether you hear the alarm while you’re in another app depends on the phone: many browsers pause background pages, so the safest option is to keep this page open on screen.
