How it keeps time
- Length: 45 minutes = 2,700 seconds.
- On Start: end time = the moment you start + 2,700 s, read from your device’s clock.
- Every update: time left = end time − now, rounded up to the whole second — so it never drifts, even in a background tab.
A half of soccer
Under Law 7 of the Laws of the Game, set by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), a match lasts two equal halves of 45 minutes, and players are entitled to a half-time interval of no more than 15 minutes. The referee adds time at the end of each half for time lost to injuries, substitutions and other stoppages, so a real half runs longer than 45 minutes. Youth leagues often play shorter halves; check your league’s rules. When the referee signals added time, +1 min lets you follow it.
Long focus blocks
Forty-five minutes of work followed by a 15-minute break fits neatly into an hour, which makes it easy to plan a day around. If you find it hard to concentrate that long, start with the 25-minute blocks of the Pomodoro timer and build up. Many schools also run class periods of around this length, so the timer works as a lesson clock on a projector — press Full screen and the digits fill the screen.
Accurate over a long countdown
Over 45 minutes, small errors add up in timers that count one second at a time, and browsers slow down pages in background tabs. This timer avoids both: it saves the end time when you press Start and shows the difference from the current time, so it is exactly as accurate as your device’s clock. The alarm is scheduled in advance for the end time.
How this timer works
Press Start, tap the digits or press Space. The timer saves the end time on your device’s clock and shows end time − now, rounded up to the second, so it stays exact even when your browser slows down background tabs; the remaining time also shows in the tab’s title. The alarm is scheduled on the Web Audio clock for the end time and beeps for up to a minute (phones that support it also vibrate). While the timer runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on. Nothing is sent anywhere: the timer runs entirely in your browser.
Other timers
Shorter: 30 Minute Timer. Longer: 1 Hour Timer. For any other length, use the countdown timer; to time how long something takes, use the stopwatch. Counting down to a date instead? See the holiday countdowns.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a half in soccer?
Forty-five minutes under IFAB’s Laws of the Game, plus any time the referee adds for stoppages. The half-time interval can be no longer than 15 minutes.
Is 45 minutes a good length for a study session?
It works well for many people, especially with a 15-minute break to round it up to an hour. There’s no single right length; the Pomodoro Technique uses 25-minute blocks.
