How it keeps time
- Length: 3 minutes = 180 seconds.
- On Start: end time = the moment you start + 180 s, read from your device’s clock.
- Every update: time left = end time − now, rounded up to the whole second — so it never drifts, even in a background tab.
Three-minute rounds
Under the Unified Rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions, each round of a professional boxing bout lasts three minutes, with a one-minute rest between rounds. Many boxing and fitness classes copy that rhythm for bag work, pad work and circuits. To train it here, run this timer for the round and the 1 minute timer for the rest, or tick Repeat to go straight into another three minutes. Full screen makes the digits readable from the far side of a gym.
Time-outs: about one minute per year of age
HealthyChildren.org, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ site for parents, suggests a time-out of about one minute for each year of a child’s age — so three minutes for a three-year-old. A visible timer helps the child see that the time-out has a clear end, and helps you stay consistent. For other ages, use the 2 minute or 5 minute timer, or add time with +1 min.
In the kitchen and the classroom
Three minutes is also a handy length for short, repeatable jobs: a quick-write at the start of a lesson, a partner discussion, or a timed round of a game. The remaining time shows in the browser tab, so you can switch to another tab — a slideshow, for example — and still keep an eye on it.
How this timer works
Press Start, tap the digits or press Space. The timer saves the end time on your device’s clock and shows end time − now, rounded up to the second, so it stays exact even when your browser slows down background tabs; the remaining time also shows in the tab’s title. The alarm is scheduled on the Web Audio clock for the end time and beeps for up to a minute (phones that support it also vibrate). While the timer runs, the page asks the browser to keep the screen on. Nothing is sent anywhere: the timer runs entirely in your browser.
