Christmas as a federal holiday
Christmas was one of the first four federal holidays, created by Congress in 1870 together with New Year’s Day, Independence Day and Thanksgiving. When December 25 falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get the Friday before off; when it falls on a Sunday, they get the Monday after. In 2027, for example, Christmas falls on a Saturday, so the federal day off is Friday, December 24, 2027. Banks, schools and private employers set their own schedules, so check with yours.
