Halloween never moves, so what changes is the weekday: in 2026 it falls on a Saturday, and in 2027 on a Sunday. It is not a federal holiday, so schools, offices and post offices keep their normal hours unless they announce otherwise. Many towns publish trick-or-treat hours, which is worth checking when Halloween falls on a weeknight.

Where the name comes from

According to the Library of Congress, Halloween grew out of the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, meaning “summer’s end”. November 1 later became the Christian feast of All Saints (All Hallows), and the evening before it became known as All Hallows’ Eve — Halloween.

Halloween and the clocks

Since 2007, daylight saving time in the US has ended on the first Sunday in November. That Sunday is always one to seven days after Halloween, so Halloween itself is always on daylight saving time in the places that observe it. In 2026, clocks go back one hour on Sunday, November 1, 2026 — the day after Halloween.
