From Decoration Day to Memorial Day
On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, head of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, issued General Order No. 11 designating May 30 as a day for decorating the graves of those who died in the Civil War. First known as Decoration Day, it was more commonly called Memorial Day by the late 19th century, and after World War I it came to honor Americans who died in all wars. Since 1971 it has been a federal holiday on the last Monday in May rather than on May 30.
