According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first Labor Day was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, as planned by the Central Labor Union. Oregon was the first state to recognize it by law, on February 21, 1887, and by 1894, 23 more states had adopted it. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making the first Monday in September a national holiday.
After Labor Day, the next federal holidays are Columbus Day (the second Monday of October; Monday, October 11, 2027) and Veterans Day (November 11), then Thanksgiving.
