How the date is set
Father’s Day is the third Sunday of June, so it always falls between June 15 and June 21 — in 2027, on June 20. The date has been set by law since 1972: Public Law 92-278, approved on April 24, 1972, designated “the third Sunday in June of each year” as Father’s Day, and President Richard Nixon’s proclamation that year named June 18, 1972.

The day began as a local celebration in Spokane, Washington, first held on June 19, 1910, at the urging of Sonora Smart Dodd, who wanted fathers honored the way mothers were on Mother’s Day.
Father’s Day and Juneteenth
Juneteenth (June 19) has been a federal holiday since 2021, and because Father’s Day can fall on any date from June 15 to 21, the two sometimes coincide. The next time is 2033. When Juneteenth falls on a Sunday like this, the federal day off is the Monday after, June 20.
